Douglass and colleagues (p 1003) interviewed 62 patients who
had presented to an emergency department in Australia for asthma, to
explore their decision to attend and their feelings towards action
plans. 29 of them actually had plans. The action plans for asthma have
previously been shown to be unpopular with both patients and
clinicians, but are a major protective factor against death from
asthma. This study showed that most patients with plans them found them
useful, but often reinterpreted the recommendations. Modification of
the plans, the authors say, was integral to their ownership and use.
