Social security data predict use of inpatient services

Social security data reflecting household income (income support, family credit, elderly people living alone, all ages standard mortality ratio, and low birth weight) predict use of inpatient services. The information can be used to develop a statistical model in which four of these variables can be updated between censuses to predict use of hospital services. Carr-Hill and colleagues (p 390), who used the resulting population risk adjustment formula in electoral wards in Northern Ireland, conclude that resources should be moved from urban to rural areas.
