Post-combat syndromes are not unique to the Gulf war

Post-combat syndromes have arisen after all major wars. In a study of war pension files dating back to 1872 Jones and colleagues (p 321) identified three clusters of post-combat syndromes. Gulf war veterans were found in all three groups, showing that not all servicemen engaged in the same conflict can be categorised in the same way. The changing form of these syndromes seems related to advances in societal mores, medical science, and changes in warfare.
