Teenagers who have higher exposure to use of tobacco in films are more
likely to try smoking. Sargent et al (p 1394) surveyed 4919 young
adolescents (aged 9-15 years) in the United States and found a strong
association between seeing smoking in films and trying smoking. Whereas
only 4.9% of students with minimal exposure to tobacco use in films
had tried smoking, 31.5% of those with heavy exposure had tried
smoking. This finding supports the hypothesis that smoking in films has
a role in the initiation of smoking in adolescents.
