Oral iron supplementation improves motor and language development
in iron deficient preschool children. Iron deficiency anaemia is
associated with defects in child development. Stoltzfus et al (p 1389)
looked at the effects of iron supplementation, anthelmintic treatment,
or both in preschool children in Zanzibar, where anaemia and
geohelminth infections were prevalent. Iron supplementation in children
with serious iron deficiency conferred important benefits to their
motor and language development, even in communities where malaria is
endemic and is a major cause of anaemia.
