Laboratory based test strategies can reduce inequalities of lipid
testing between general practices before and during lipid lowering
treatment. Smellie and colleagues (p 1224) designed such strategies to
change general practices' use of such tests and to audit lipid testing
in the prevention of coronary heart disease. The strategies were
adopted by 20 of the 22 general practices in the authors' catchment
area. The strategies define the tests and advice offered for different
categories of coronary prevention patients and also provide a means of
auditing data on both clinical activity and laboratory outcomes for
primary care groups.
