Pre-eclampsia increases long term risk of death from cardiovascular causes

Women with pre-eclampsia and who have preterm deliveries have a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease than women without pre-eclampsia whose pregnancies go to term. In a population based cohort study, Irgens et al (p 1213) looked at a period of 25 years to assess overall mortality and mortality from specific causes among the mothers and fathers of 626 272 infants that were the mother's first delivery. The risk of death from cancer was reduced among the mothers who had pre-eclampsia. No increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease was found in the fathers of pre-eclamptic pregnancies.
