Enuresis alarms are effective and safe for treating children with
nocturnal enuresis but require several months of continuous use, making
them unsuitable for some families. The drugs desmoressin and imipramine
both ameliorate bedwetting but benefit may not last after treatment has
stopped. Serious adverse effects are common with imipramine, so it
should be used with great caution. It is important that parents and
children should actively participate in the choice of treatment. Evans
discusses the evidence for the treatment of bedwetting on p 1167. The
article also shows that daytime urinary symptoms in a bedwetting child
suggest an underlying bladder dysfunction rather than nocturnal enuresis.
