Impaired growth prenatally is strongly associated with haemorrhagic
stroke, but not with occlusive stoke. The results of Hypponen and
colleagues (p 1033) are based on a historical cohort study of all
14 611 people born in the Uppsala Academic Hospital between 1915 and
1929. The association between impaired fetal growth and haemorrhagic
stroke was not accounted for by socioeconomic confounding factors and
was not affected by adjustments for gestational age.
