The risk of premature death in middle age is much greater in the
most deprived fifth of the population than in the least deprived
even though the conditions that people die of are largely the same. Chalmers
and Capewell used Scottish census projections and Carstairs deprivation
scores to construct cohort survival graphs: disease specific survival
charts were built up for each deprivation group, as shown below
(p 967). The graphs show that no specific diseases are related to
deprivation
rather, deprived people have the same mortality as
affluent people who are seven years older.
