Deprived people die of the same diseases as the affluent---just earlier

The risk of premature death in middle age is much greater in the most deprived fifth of the population than in the least deprived---even though the conditions that people die of are largely the same. Chalmers and Capewell used Scottish census projections and Carstairs deprivation scores to construct cohort survival graphs: disease specific survival charts were built up for each deprivation group, as shown below (p 967). The graphs show that no specific diseases are related to deprivation---rather, deprived people have the same mortality as affluent people who are seven years older.
