Risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding increases with inhibition of serotonin reuptake

Antidepressants with high inhibition of serotonin reuptake increase the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding particularly in patients aged over 80 and those with previous gastrointestinal bleeds. In their retrospective cohort study of 317 824 elderly patients in Canada, Walraven and colleagues (p 655) found that, after adjustment for age and previous gastrointestinal bleeding, the risk of bleeding increased by 10.7% and 9.8% respectively with increasing inhibition of serotonin reuptake.
