Injecting the axillae with botulinum toxin type A reduced sweating by
more than 80% at four weeks in patients with hyperhidrosis. In a
multicentre randomised controlled trial, Naumann et al (p 596) found
that the toxin was more effective than placebo in terms of number of
responders, percentage decrease in sweating, and absolute sweat
production. Patient satisfaction was high and adverse events were few.
The treatment remained effective at 16 weeks. The authors say that
botulinum toxin type A should replace current surgical and medical
treatments for this disorder.
