Standard of dementia care in NHS and private facilities is low

The standard of care for people with dementia in both private and NHS facilities is low and needs radical improvement, according to a cross sectional survey of seven NHS and 10 private care facilities. Ballard and colleagues (p 426) mapped the care of 218 people with dementia by observing their activities over six hours. Only 14% of that time was spent communicating with staff or other residents, and less than 3% was spent in everyday constructive activities other than watching television. The facilities chosen were not selected because of perceived poor standard of care and were considered to be representative.
