The effect of maternal age on risk of type 1 diabetes among
children increases with rising birth order, a large cohort study has
shown. Stene et al examined the interaction in a study of all births in
Norway over 25 years (p 369). They found that maternal age had no
effect on risk of diabetes in firstborn children but became
increasingly important in subsequent children. However, for children
born to mothers under 30, risk decreased with increasing birth order.
The mechanisms behind these complex patterns remain unclear.
