Reduced osmolarity oral rehydration solution decreases the need for
intravenous infusion compared with standard WHO solution among children
with diarrhoea (Hahn et al, p 81). This systematic review also showed
that children receiving the reduced osmolarity solution had lower stool
output and less vomiting. The authors suggest that the results support
a change in WHO policy, although they are cautious about use of the
reduced osmolarity formulation in patients with cholera.
