Multidisciplinary approach can improve back pain

Intensive daily multidisciplinary biopyschosocial rehabilitation (>100 hours) with a functional restorative approach improves pain and function in chronic low back pain but vocational outcomes are less clear. However, it is uncertain whether these improvements with intensive treatments are worth the costs involved. Guzman et al (p 1511) concluded this from their systematic literature review of randomised controlled trials, which resulted in 10 eligible trials and included 1964 patients. They also found that less intensive outpatient psychophysical interventions have no effect on clinical outcomes, and they noted that few trials reported effects on quality of life.
