Children drinking probiotic milk have less respiratory infections

Children drinking 260 ml a day of milk containing the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG had fewer respiratory infections with complications and fewer days away from day care because of illness than children drinking "normal milk." In a double blind, randomised controlled trial of 571 Finnish children aged 1 to 6 Hatakka et al (p 1327) show that children in the Lactobacillus group also had less complications from respiratory infections and antibiotic treatment than the control group. Although the effects of Lactobacillus GG were small, they were consistently better than "normal" milk.
