Computer based education works for schizophrenic patients

Little is known about the effectiveness and cost of computer based patient education for patients who may be difficult to engage, such as those with schizophrenia. Jones et al (p 835) compared computer based education with that delivered by a community psychiatric nurse. Patients found computer based education acceptable. There was no major difference in knowledge or psychological outcomes, and some preferred the computer to sessions with the community psychiatric nurse. However, the need to transport patients to use the computer meant that this option was not, as anticipated, cheaper.
