Home chemotherapy is a feasible alternative to outpatient clinic

Home chemotherapy has been proposed as an alternative to outpatient treatment, but few studies have compared its impact on outcomes such as quality of life, use of health services, and satisfaction or compliance with treatment. Borras et al (p 826) conducted a randomised trial comparing home chemotherapy with outpatient treatment in 87 patients with colorectal cancer. They found no differences in patients' quality of life or non-programmed use of health services. However, patients given home treatment showed greater satisfaction with some aspects of care and better compliance with treatment. The authors conclude that home chemotherapy seems an acceptable and safe alternative to outpatient treatment that, by increasing patient satisfaction, may improve compliance with treatment.
