Amphotericin B is the mainstay of treatment for many mycoses. A
deoxycholate formulation has been used for decades despite its
toxicity. The toxicity can be reduced by combining the drug with
lipids, but this is costly. Eriksson et al (p 579) performed a
randomised open study with 80 patients and showed that a continuous infusion of amphotericin B reduced toxicity in a manner similar to that
reported for liposomal amphotericin B. The authors recommend using this
method whenever practicable.
