Prostitutes working outdoors experience more violence than those working indoors

Violence towards prostitutes by their clients is a neglected yet important health problem. On p 524 Church et al report on the prevalence of such violence against female prostitutes working indoors and outdoors in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Leeds. The authors contacted 156 prostitutes at their place of work and 84 through drop in centres. Outdoor prostitutes experienced more violence and tended to be younger and involved in prostitution at an earlier age than those working indoors. Only 34% who had experienced violence reported it to the police. The authors state that a first step in preventing and reducing such violence against prostitutes is to recognise that it takes place.
