Transmission rate of blood borne viruses in exposed health workers is very low

Since 1997, occupational health departments in the United Kingdom have recorded work related exposure to blood borne viruses. On p 397 Evans et al show that during three years 813 reports were made in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Nurses and midwives were most often exposed and incidents that occurred during performance of procedures were the most common method of exposure. One transmission occurred among 293 exposures to HIV and none in the 462 exposures to hepatitis C virus.
