Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs taken during pregnancy may increase risk of miscarriage

Knowledge on the safety of taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while pregnant is limited. In a population based study Nielsen et al (p 266) investigated a possible association between take up of prescriptions for these drugs and adverse birth outcome in a cohort of 1462 women. They also assessed the risks of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in a case-control study that compared 4268 cases of miscarriage with 29 750 primiparous controls who had live births. They found no increased risk of adverse birth outcome in women who took up prescriptions for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but there was a strong positive association with miscarriage.
