Recolonisation with normal flora decreases the recurrence of otitis media

The normal bacterial flora of the mucous membranes is important in preventing infections. Roos et al (p 210) studied the recolonisation of otitis prone children with alpha  streptococci after antibiotic treatment. They showed that a greater number of patients were healthy and had a normal tympanic membrane compared with those given placebo. Antibiotics that influence the normal flora might paradoxically contribute to recurrent infection. Therefore, restoration of the normal flora would be the logical way to prevent further recurrences of otitis media.
