Cholesterol reduction does not affect non-illness mortality

Cholesterol lowering interventions are effective in lowering the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, it is unclear whether these treatments have unintended effects on the central nervous system and brain function. On p 11 Muldoon et al report a meta-analysis of the effect of cholesterol reduction on deaths from suicide, accident, or violence. They found no overall effect on non-illness mortality. Statins in particular did not affect non-illness mortality, but the effect of other treatments was less clear.
