Diabetic patients with hyper- tension benefit from dual blockade of renin-angiotensin system

Over half of patients with type 2 diabetes have or develop hypertension. There seems to be no distinct cut off level regarding the subsequent risk related to blood pressure in these patients, but those with microalbuminuria are particularly at risk. The study by Mogensen et al (p 1440) introduces a new concept in the management of hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria and possibly also management of essential hypertension. Dual blockade of the renin-angiotensin system significantly reduced blood pressure in these high risk patients.
