Osteoarthritis of the hip is under strong genetic influence

The development of hip osteoarthritis, a major cause of pain and disability, is likely to be multifactorial. Lanyon et al (p 1179) report on a substantially increased risk of hip osteoarthritis among the siblings of patients who had undergone a hip replacement. Their findings support the hypothesis that the development of hip osteoarthritis is under strong genetic influence, although it is also possible that this familial aggregation of disease could be explained by non-genetic factors. The immediate clinical relevance of these results is in the identification of family history as a major risk factor.
