Lipid lowering for heart attack works best in those at high risk

The proper role of drug treatment for lipid disorders in the primary prevention of coronary heart disease remains controversial. On p 983 Pignone et al present an updated meta-analysis of four major trials showing that drug treatment reduces the relative risk of non-fatal and fatal myocardial infarctions by about 30% but has little or no effect on all cause mortality over five to seven years. These findings show that drug treatment has more effect in patients with higher baseline risk.
