Onset of forearm pain can be predicted

The aetiology of forearm pain has been the subject of intensive controversy. Is it a consequence of physical exposures (particularly in the workplace) such as repetitive movements of the upper limb, or is it one manifestation of high levels of psychological distress? Macfarlane et al (p 676) conducted a prospective population based cohort study of almost 2000 people to identify important risk factors. Onset was predicted by repetitive movements of the arms or wrists in the workplace, dissatisfaction with support from supervisors and colleagues at work, and factors such as psychological distress and aspects of illness behaviour.
