C pneumoniae infection is not strongly associated with heart disease

Chronic infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae has been suggested to be an avoidable cause of coronary heart disease, but most studies have been small. Wald et al (p 204) and Danesh et al (p 208) report two large prospective studies on serum markers of chronic C pneumoniae infection and major coronary events. Neither study observed strong associations of these markers with heart disease or with risk factors for heart disease. In an updated meta-analysis including both new studies and 13 previous studies, Danesh et al reported a combined odds ratio for heart disease of only about 1.1, which was not significant.
