Drug use and hepatitis are endemic in Irish prisons

Prison health care in Britain and Ireland needs scrutiny and improvement. The Irish national survey carried out by Allwright et al, which examined prevalence of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV and risk behaviour in Irish prisoners, shows this clearly (p 78). The results indicate that drug use and infection with hepatitis C are endemic among Irish prisoners. The investigators found indirect evidence that being in prison may increase health risks for this already disadvantaged population. A rethink on the provision of harm reduction strategies in Irish prisons is needed.
