Gene mutation found that might predispose to type 2 diabetes

Gene mutation HFE C282Y (present in 10% of the UK population) predisposes to haemochromatosis, which commonly leads to type 2 diabetes. Salonen et al (p 1706) therefore studied over 500 middle aged Finnish men over four years to see whether carrier status for the C282Y mutation predicted the development of type 2 diabetes. Four (11%) of the carriers and 23 (5%) of the non-carriers developed diabetes. The authors suggest that screening for C282Y status might help prevent some cases of diabetes.
