Fetal loss is high in women aged over 40 years

Fetal loss, particularly spontaneous abortion, is a common event in gynaecology and general practice, although the specific cause is most often unknown. On the basis of data from population based registers in Denmark, Nybo Andersen et al (p 1708) assessed the influence of maternal age and a woman's reproductive history on fetal loss. The authors found that women aged more than 40 years have a poor chance of a successful pregnancy, irrespective of their reproductive history.
