Troponin T predicts mortality in patients with ischaemic stroke

Electrocardiographic changes, arrhythmias, and raised creatine kinase concentration have been noted in some patients after a stroke. In their study of 181 patients admitted to hospital with acute ischaemic stroke, James et al (p 1502) found that troponin T concentration at admission is a powerful predictor of mortality. A raised concentration was found in 17% of patients and was associated with a threefold increased risk of death. The authors recommend further study to investigate the cause of this cardiac damage and its contribution to mortality.
