Consultants feel imbalance between work and family life

Current UK Department of Health initiatives are directed at the promotion of family friendly policies in the NHS. Little qualitative research has been conducted on the balance of work and family life among doctors and hospital consultants. Dumelow et al (p 1437) explored this relation among 202 hospital consultants and examined consultants' attitudes towards factors that influence this relation. Many male consultants and some female consultants expressed dissatisfaction with the balance between their career and their personal and family life. The authors suggest that family friendly policies ought to take account of the need for a fundamental change in hospital medical culture to enable doctors to have fulfilling professional and personal lives.
