Adding salmeterol is more effective than increasing inhaled steroids in symptomatic asthma

The beta 2 agonist debate in the early 1990s overshadowed the introduction of salmeterol, resulting in greater emphasis on higher doses of inhaled steroids for control of asthma. On p 1368 Shrewsbury et al report on a meta-analysis of the benefit of adding salmeterol compared with increasing the dose of steroids. The addition of long acting bronchodilator resulted in greater benefit for lung function, better control of symptoms, and reduced use of rescue medication compared with an increased dose of steroids. Additionally, fewer patients experienced exacerbations.
