Temperature measured at the axilla in children and young people may be misleading

The accurate measurement of temperature in children and young people is important in certain clinical situations. Craig et al (p 1174) evaluated the agreement between temperatures measured at the axilla (commonly used in children and young people) and those measured at the rectum in a systematic review and found that agreement is relatively low. Low grade fever may not be detected when temperature is measured at the axilla, and when precise measurement is important the measurement may not be sufficiently accurate.
