Smoking is most prevalent among people of low education

In most countries smoking is more prevalent among less educated people, but important international variations are observed. On p 1102 Cavelaars et al compared the educational differences in smoking among men and women from 12 European countries. A north-south pattern, with strong gradients in northern Europe and weaker or reversed gradients in southern Europe, was found for women and to a lesser extent for men aged 45-74 years but not for younger men. In most countries, smoking differences were greater among younger than older people. Socioeconomic differences in diseases related to smoking will increase in many European countries.
