Savings outweigh costs of nurse telephone consultation in out of hours primary care

Lattimer et al (p 1053) report on a cost analysis based on over 14 000 calls during a randomised controlled trial. They show that if the NHS rather than general practitioners funded nurse telephone consultation in out of hours primary care, costs could be outweighed by savings in the long run as a result of reduced demand for emergency admission to hospital. The results of this study may not apply where there is not a single access point to out of hours primary care services.
