Recognition of television images may be a milestone in children's development

Evaluating the development of young children who do not talk can be difficult. Lloyd and Brodie (p 836) interviewed the parents of nearly 800 children and established that by 18 months nearly all the children could recognise the television image of a cat, dog, or baby. Asking parents about this milestone can easily be incorporated into the developmental assessment of children aged 15 to 24 months. Inquiry about this milestone should be combined with discussion about the drawbacks of excessive television viewing.
