Weight reduction alleviates asthma in obese asthmatic people

Weight reduction improves lung function, asthma symptoms, and health status in obese patients with asthma. Until now, no investigations have been published on the influence of weight reduction on asthma. Stenius-Aarniala et al (p 827) conducted a randomised controlled study on weight reduction in obese asthmatic people. A group of 19 obese asthmatic people reduced their weight by means of a supervised weight reduction programme. Forced expiratory volume in one second, forced vital capacity, and health status improved significantly in the participants in the treatment group; they also experienced fewer exacerbations and needed fewer courses of oral steroids than the controls during the follow up year.
