Preventive home visits need improving

In the past two decades a substantial number of randomised controlled trials examining the effects of preventive home visits to elderly people living in the community have been performed. On p 754 van Haastregt et al present the results of a recent systematic review of these trials and show that there is no clear evidence in favour of positive effects from preventive home visits. The authors conclude that if substantial improvements in the effectiveness of such a programme cannot be achieved in the near future, then perhaps such visits should be discontinued.
