Older people suffer more adverse events but they have more complex care

A study of adverse events in hospitals in Utah and Colorado in 15 000 people showed that those aged 65 or over had higher rates of all adverse events (5.29% v 2.8%) and preventable adverse events (2.95% v 1.58%) than those aged under 65 (p 741). When Thomas and Brennan adjusted for comorbid illness and case mix, however, they found that age was not an independent predictor of preventable adverse events.
