Stroke units seem to have a long term impact on patients' outcomes

The benefits of stroke units in improving the outcome for patients with stroke have been attributed to treatment provided in the first few weeks after the stroke. To assess the long term effects Lincoln et al followed up patients who had been randomised to care in a non-acute stroke rehabilitation unit or care on conventional wards five years earlier (p 549). Using death, disability, and being in an institution as outcomes, they found that patients who had been in the stroke unit did slightly better.
