British psychiatrists resist home treatment

On p 305 Smyth and Hoult ask why home treatment for acute mental illness is rarely available in Britain, despite good evidence that it is effective and safe for up to 80% of psychiatric patients currently admitted to hospital. They argue that home care is cheaper and has some advantages over hospital care, and they blame a defensive attitude within psychiatry for the dearth of home treatment in Britain.
