Behavioural treatment may help solve childhood sleep problems

Sleeping difficulties in young children are common and troublesome and associated with family stress. Ramchandani et al (p 209) conducted a systematic review of randomised controlled trials of the treatment of settling problems and night waking in young children and conclude that although drugs seem to be helpful for some children with night waking problems in the short term, their long term efficacy is unimpressive. In contrast, teaching children appropriate sleeping habits by using a variety of psychological techniques shows both short term efficacy and possible longer term benefits, indicating they should be the treatment of choice.
