Touch screen system and leaflet equally effective at informing women about prenatal tests

Graham et al (p 155) conducted a randomised trial to compare the effectiveness of a touch screen system with an information leaflet at providing women with information on prenatal tests. The 875 women in the trial had a good baseline knowledge of prenatal tests. Women exposed to both the touch screen and the leaflet showed no greater understanding of the purpose of the tests than women exposed only to the leaflet, but their uptake of detailed anomaly scans was significantly higher and, among nulliparous women, their levels of anxiety declined significantly. The authors conclude that the touch screen may be most effective for providing information to women who have an adverse history or abnormal results from tests in their current pregnancy.
