Risk of subarachnoid haemorrhage is raised in families of patients with the condition

First degree relatives of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage are reported to be at increased risk of the condition. The results of previous studies could have been biased by the way patients and pedigrees were identified. To overcome these problems Gaist et al (p 141) used nationwide Danish registers and identified a large cohort of patients and their first degree relatives. Follow up showed that first degree relatives were at a threefold to fivefold increased risk of having a subarachnoid haemorrhage compared with the background population.
