Immunising children aged 1 year against rubella interrupts transmission
of the virus and increases age at infection of non-immunised people. If
vaccination coverage is low this can theoretically increase the
incidence of rubella among older age groups and lead to an increase in
congenital rubella. Panagiotopoulos et al (p 1462) showed that this
occurred in Greece and suggest that it was the result of inconsistent
immunisation policies.
