General practitioners do not see a role for themselves in assessing
genetic risk in the implementation of new genetic technology. This view
is at odds with that of policy makers, who have assumed that education
and desk top technology is all that is required to enable GPs to
implement genetic advances. In a qualitative interview study (p 1410)
Kumar and Gantley discovered that general practitioners saw their role
as supporting patients and families and integrating biomedical
knowledge with patients' priorities. Many were also unhappy about
doing tests to identify genetic susceptibility to a disease without
being able to offer any preventive treatment.
